Refuting irrational beliefs: My Way or the HighwayLike replacing bad habits with good ones, your irrational thoughts must be replaced with more rational, helpful  ones. Hopefully you have identified those thoughts that tend to plague you.

Maybe even filled out the BELIEFS INVENTORY.

Because now we are going to take a closer look at each of those pesky irrational thoughts spelled out in What are You Thinking.  

We looked at our irrational need for approval  and perfectionism already.  Then we moved on to  our tendency to judge others harshly.  And now we are going to look at our tendency to want EVERYTHING our way.  And maybe to think that the world will end when we don’t get what we want.  Sound familiar?

Let’s get started!

Irrational Belief #4:  

The idea that it is horrible when things are not the way we like them to be

Rational Thought: 

Believe it or not, the world is not here just to please you. 

How many times have you told a child “You can’t have everything you want”? And yet, as adults a lot of us continue to have that “I want it all my way” attitude. 

The idea is silly, no matter who has it. 

Sometimes we just can’t have things exactly the way we want them.  There is nothing wrong, however, with trying to change the parts of our life that we don’t like. 

But,  If changes aren’t possible, accept it and move on. 

Countering Irrational Beliefs 4: Here’s a handy little printable worksheet to help you learn to counteract that self-centered inner child who demands that everything be tailored to THEIR preferences.  Try it out.  You CAN change how you think.  And that WILL change how you feel and how you act.
